CHAPTER SEVEN
LIAM made steady progress and by the following day Gemma was told that the doctor would discharge him when he made his rounds of the ward later that afternoon.
âThank heavens for that!â Gemmaâs mother was in the room with her daughter and she smiled over at Liam. âYouâll be home by tea-time with a bit of luck.â
âWill I be coming back to your house or Daddyâs house?â Liam asked, looking over at his mother.
âYouâll be coming back to our house, darling.â Gemma frowned. âWhy are you asking that?â
âBecause itâs Saturday and I usually stay at Daddyâs house on Saturday.â
âOh! Well, not this Saturday,â Gemma said softly, wondering if this was a disappointment to Liam. Did he prefer staying at his dadâs house? she wondered suddenly. The thought was cold in the pit of her stomach.
âWhere is Marcus?â Joanne asked, cutting into her thoughts.
âHe left in the early hours of the morning. Said heâd be back around eleven.â
Gemma could hardly bear to think about Marcus. The atmosphere between them since the incident in her bedroom yesterday had been so tense it was almost tangible. She was furious with herself for allowing him to touch her and for wanting him so much, furious with him for being so damn arrogant and so sexually adept at turning her on.
When they had met up at Liamâs bedside again yesterday, the memory of what had transpired between them had been so disturbing she had hardly been able to look at him. But Marcus had acted as if nothing had happened, chatting about nothing in particular, laughing with Liam and the nurses. The more nonchalant he had seemed, the more the episode took on a feeling almost of unreality. Yet her body had reminded her forcefully that it had been no dream. Her skin had still tingled from the touch of his hands, and she could still feel the imprint of his lips, so dominant, so sensually arousing against the softness of her mouth. Every time she thought about what had happened she felt a fierce thrust of desire that refused to go away, no matter how hard she tried to dismiss it.
âHow are you and Marcus getting on?â her mother asked suddenly, and she felt herself blush to the roots of her hair.
âWeâre getting along okay.â She shrugged and looked away.
âI just wondered how it was goingâ¦with you spending so much time together.â
Gemma was very glad when the nurse came into the room, taking the focus of attention away from her. âYou know, I think I had better go and ring Richard,â she said suddenly. âHe said he might come and see Liam this afternoon, and I donât want him to have a wasted trip.â
It was a relief to get out of the room away from her motherâs perceptive gaze. But she was only halfway down the corridor towards the phone when Joanne caught up with her. âSo whatâs really going on?â she asked firmly.
âMum, nothing is going on.â
âCome on, Gemma, Iâm not stupid.
